RECAP AND REVIEW

This is a contemporary romance book. I believe this is the second book in an interconnected standalone series but I’m not 100% sure. While reading it, Maggie’s friend, Savvy, and Savvy’s story was brought up. This is the first one I read.

I wanted to like this book more than I did. The cover and the title drew me in. I actually think friends to lovers is an underrated trope. Trope in mind, while reading, it was clear how the story would end, which, to me, doesn’t matter because reading can be about the journey. However, Maggie annoyed me at times. She was very much in denial and blind to what was obvious, which fine, but on top of that, she was complaining a lot about never finding the perfect guy when he was right there like a puppy dog. People would bring it up and she’d get defensive.

It also didn’t feel like she was happy for her friend’s engagements, though she was. Jealousy is natural, but I don’t think she went about it in a constructive or considerate way. Their wedding became about her in different ways throughout the story. Her friends clearly care about her though and didn’t seem to mind.

I liked Garret. He knows Maggie like the back of his hand and is there for her when she needs it. Not long after his introduction, it became clear what was really going on. But it’s also kind of sad how things play out. Like would he ever have spoken up? They’ve known each other a long time.

There’s also a love triangle in play, but I don’t think it was that convincing. The end got a little repetitive with Maggie asking the same question to different people and getting the same response back in a different font.

What I liked about this book was the friendships between the girls and even Maggie’s friendship with Garrett. It gave chosen family energy and I loved their dynamics together. I also found the dates from the apps amusing. There were times I was laughing out loud throughout the story.

OVERALL

Overall, I give this book a 3 out of 5 stars. It’s a light palette cleanser and the humor made up for what I wasn’t drawn to. I’m probably going to go back to read Savvy’s story at some point.
