RECAP AND REVIEW
This is a Christmas romance movie on Netflix that has a Hallmark feel to it. The way this movie plays out follows a typical formula found within the romance genre, making it pretty clear who ends up together before they even realize it, so if you’re looking for something brand new and exciting, this probably isn’t for you. Remember, for me it’s about the journey.
The movie is set up like a quest, for about 24 hours, where she and her personal concierge, Teddy, played by Devale Ellis, need to accomplish various tasks in order to get their hands on a Pentatonix ticket, only some of those tasks don’t end up working out.
Some the tropes and microtropes include:
A holiday romance
Invisible strings
Dress reveal
Meet the family
Instalove
Fated romance
I love fated romance and individual strings, and seeing those played out and how details were slowly being revealed was cute.
There’s a subplot of Pentatonix following along on the journey of the two leads through their cell phones, which was a bit unclear to me. I think I missed something. From what I understood, they were trying to find ways to help them get a ticket, without straight up handing it them? Or was it that the concierge company was updating them? I don’t know. It was definitely a way to give them roles in the movie, and I don’t know how I feel about that. but I do like their music and enjoyed that we got to hear them perform a few songs.
My favorite parts of the movie are the scenes with Jordy, Teddy’s cousin, played by Kalen Allen. Although there were funny part throughout the film, Jordy was the highlight and I feel like the movie really picked up from there.
I also liked how it ended and it showed that even though Layla made the choice she did, fate was on her side too, showing who she was meant to be with.
If you like Christmas romance movies, Hallmark inspired media, and/or fated romance, I’d recommend it.
