SYNOPSIS

Michael was born into a family that runs a secret society. Though he’s rebelled against it for years, he knows it’s fruitless and is now willing enough to do his part and follow their rules so he can Ascend by his 33rd birthday. The first step is transferring hospitals, easy enough since he’s a great surgeon.

Azara is working towards being a surgeon at the hospital her father is a medical director in. She has a routine until she gets a new boss that is both arrogant and hot, who she can’t seem to avoid inside and outside the workplace.

This is the first book in a potential dark romance contemporary series. It’s told by both Michael and Azara in first person.

There’s two main stories we follow: Michael and his upcoming Ascension and Michael and Azara

Although Michael is the central character, to me, we still learn a lot about Azara and her habits, feelings, and backstory. I loved both of them and found them to be compatible and even more alike than different. Both have complicated relationships with their fathers, both are surgeons, and both have a younger siblings. Azara grieves her mother and Michael grieves the life he could’ve had if he wasn’t born into the House.

And let me tell you, Michael!!! That man is smooth. He’s down bad and I loved every second from his flirting to his tender and thoughtful moments.

I also think the characters and their place in this world were fully thought out. I enjoyed the pacing of this book and how it feels like we’re genuinely apart of their journey. Months (at least a year) passes as the story goes on vs. everything happening within a single day or a few weeks. It was refreshing for me.

Because of the time that passes, it is a slow burn, but it didn’t feel like it to me. Still, there’s pining, banter, and tension between the two.

Michael’s Ascension is high stakes, because failure means death. The tension created because of what he had to do and the effects his actions caused kept me on my toes. I was stressed out. This book took me on an emotional rollercoaster in the best way.
