RECAP AND REVIEW

Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and Frayed Pages x Wattpad for an ARC in exchange for a copy.

So far, this is a standalone romance book told from the first person of both Heath and Teagan.

The two of them are in the same circle of former elementary school classmates, who are still friends and get together in the summers. This summer, one of their friends, Ryan, is getting married and Teagan is helping plan it.

The main friend group in this story was a lot. Teagan is the only woman apart of it, not counting significant others, and everyone else is white. She acknowledges they’re a handful with their antics and privileges and is aware of how difficult they are but tolerates it for whatever reason. Jermey made the most sense about their friendship group and I think he was smart in his choice.

There is a friends with benefits contract signed and we are present for most of those moments. The contract keeps their relationship pretty surface level and their past covered in the beginning, but because it’s first person we see their thoughts when they’re together and apart.

I loved the banter between the two of them. They are technically friends, but Teagan supposedly hates him because their history. To me, they had chemistry, and I enjoyed most of their interactions together and their pining as well as l their independent backstories. Honestly what we learn about them individually kept me hooked.

Teagan, along with her two Asian brothers, were adopted by white parents who have high standards. They don’t realize how she moves through the world differently as a Black woman and don’t realize in order to meet their expectations, she spreads herself thin. In fact, no one really see how tired, anxious, and stressed she is from her perfectionism, except Heath.

Heath has his mom on his mind, who keeps being sent to rehab by his Dad. Heath’s concerned the root issue of what his mom goes through isn’t be treated and it’s not revealed until near the end what’s going on.
