RECAP AND REVIEW

Thank you to the author for an arc!

Read it now!

This is currently a standalone young adult, romance, fantasy book.

This book is appropriately compared to The Little Mermaid by audience because it did give off those vibes.

Queer relationships are woven into this world, so there’s no need to worry about homophobia/lesbophobia!

Avarie and Lahna are both dreamers who become forced into being realists in a way. They both envision a world where humans and mermaids can coexist, though it’s far from the current reality.

This book is mainly about their love story and then secondly about the task that Avarie sets out to complete, though Avarie admits that she’s getting distracted. I believed in their love, though it did feel insta-lovey, but they are young, so I’m not knocking it. They’re both aware of their attraction and find easy comfort around each other. I was concerned about how things would end up between them because things got complicated, but I enjoy how it ended.

I also enjoyed the world building and felt the stakes of the different situations at hand. I became invested in most of these character’s journeys and thought the imagery was really well done. The only thing was that I wish we got more of is when it came to a few of the side characters. Their motivations were an important part of the story, but I was a little confused about their reasonings and how it ended up all playing. And I do wish we got more examples of sirens, because in this book there is a difference between sirens and mermaids.

This book takes two beings who feel disconnected from their families and find connection elsewhere. It also tackles grief and loss and navigating through the expectations that are placed on you.

Remember, this is a YA story and the leads are young!

Overall, I give this a 4 out of 5 stars! I really enjoyed this one and it’s a pretty quick read. If there is a second book, I will be running to see what else happens next and I’m looking forward to reading more from this author.
